MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas
Emerald-green glass-clad and guarded by a 45-foot-tall bronze lion, the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino is located on the south end of the Strip. The hotel contains theaters and arenas featuring musicians and performers. The Lion Habitat presents six cats in a habitat with rocks, trees and waterfalls. A transparent glass tunnel winds through the terrain for closer viewing. The hotel contains a coconut-grove garden with five pools, three spa tubs and one-quarter mile slow-moving river. The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino contains a 29,000 square foot Japanese-style spa and health center offering treatments including Zen Stone Massage and Fijian Sugar Rub.
Room Quality: The West Wing are the smallest rooms: smaller than Grand Tower rooms at a typical hotel-room 350 s.f. They are in an older building, but do have nicer-than-average bedding and furniture, modern fixtures, a “boutique” hotel vibe, flat screen TVs in the bedroom and bathroom, and no bathtubs. The Grand Tower is preferable to us, because the rooms are an average 100 s.f. larger. They are well-appointed. The king rooms have nice settees. The colors are light and the furnishings are fairly high quality with a modern feel. The bathrooms are spacious, with marble, but not fancy. No matter where your room is in this monstrosity, it’ll be a long way from the front desk.
The MGM Grand is HUGE and has a lot to offer. Our Grand Tower room was clean, and comfortable. The curtains were very heavy, perfect for sleeping in. The Duce picks up just 1 block north (very close). The “Farmers Market” offers quick meals that won’t break the bank (about $10 each).
MGM Lion Habitat
This Habitat houses eight African Lions, all of which are descendants of the original MGM marquee Lion, Metro. The exhibit is open daily from 11 A.M to 10 P.M., and admission is free. When you visit this exhibit, you can learn about the lions while observing them in their habitat. If you go at the right time, you will be able to see trainers feed the lions a treat. The exit to the Habitat consists of a gift shop, where you can purchase souvenirs with a distinct lion theme.
